When starting your own business, the name will be carrying quite a bit of weight. It becomes the face of your company and what others can quickly recognize as “you” in the sea of other sellers. Equally as important is the visual style guide that compliments your logo. For what good does a logo do, if your website or print collateral aren’t cohesive? It can be easy to come up with a logo, but a visual style guide goes a step further.
I had a dear friend reach out to me to create a logo for her photography business. I started asking what her colors and the “feel” of her business were. She admitted that she didn’t have that defined so I offered to include that in her logo design. I was able to leverage what I know of her to create a guide that is 100% her, which is the goal of a good, especially when your business is an extension of yourself. She knew she wanted a dandelion blowing in the wind. I paired that with a color palate of lavender, pale green, and light blue, because to me those colors felt like looking over a wildflower field after the rain.
For a well-rounded guide, I like to include the logo, colors (with hex codes), example of social media/website buttons, stamps, coordinating fonts, and repeating patterns. I started by painting the dandelion in watercolor for the logo and the calligraphy for the main text of the design. I digitally enhanced both so I could convert them into vector files. From there, most of my work was on the computer, to layout the stamps and surface patterns in a repeating design.
Now, my photographer friend is set up for a successful start to her 2021. I’m very much looking forward to seeing how she has put this all together, and together we’re looking forward to seeing her patterns in action!
